I was tooling around in my car Monday morning when my radio went crazy and started broadcasting strange voices calling a murderer a hero.
The Todd and Don show on KLBJ is a daily respite from the Mark and Sam hysterics we get first thing in the morning. Only Ed comes through from time to time with a hint of sanity, and he is often beaten down by callers and Sam Cox disagreeing with his attempt to bring some common sense to the conversation.
Last Monday was a day of hearing caller after caller test the mettle of Todd and Don as some of them insisted Joe Stack was a hero.
Stack’s daughter, now a resident of Norway thank God, was the pied piper of this idea that an insane man who first set his house afire leaving his wife and daughter homeless was a hero.
I might settle for him being a selfish SOB but not a hero; a murderer but not a hero; a right-wing nut but not a hero. As I listened to others putting this loser on a pedestal and telling their tales of IRS nightmares, I suddenly remembered I live in Texas where quite a few certifiable nut cases run loose. I remembered you don’t have to pass a sanity exam to get a cell phone, or a gun, or I guess an airplane either.
I was somewhat encouraged by the people calling in to support Todd and Don in their effort to say this guy was a coward, a loser, and no hero.
I kept remembering they are on a radio station that makes a ton of money featuring hate speakers, anti-government ideologues like Sam and Mark, Rush, and Neal and others.
I realized these callers calling him a hero just finished listening to right-wing chatter, and are waiting to hear three hours more when Rush comes on later.
It made me face the reality of these times; our nation is being dumbed down, and numbed out by rhetoric that inspires racism, homophobia, insurrection, and acts of random violence.
I was moved a couple of times to call in myself and let people know not every Austinite is crazy from the unusual weather we are living with now, but didn’t because then people would know I live in the midst of crazies.
How can any decent law abiding citizen find anything heroic about a guy like this? Why didn’t he sell his airplane and either pay IRS or hire himself a good tax attorney and fight the agency.
Why did he have to kill Vernon Hunter? Vernon did two tours in ‘Nam, worked for a living, loved his wife and children, and went to church on Sunday.
Joe Stack never served his country, didn’t pay his taxes, and left his family homeless – but some call him a hero.
Those nitwits so in hate with America and our government should probably move to Norway and join Joe Stack’s daughter in exile.
Those of us who love liberty and peace should lift the hunter family up in prayer, and thank God the carnage was not what the murderer Joe Stack had hoped for.
God is good, and I can already see Vernon in the bosom of Abraham. We have a lot of troubled souls in society today so this probably won’t be the last time some disconnected nut case commits an act of terror.
Just remember this, when your hero is a terrorist you have embraced an ideology that victimizes innocent people to make a point; you are an enabler of insanity; you too are the scum of the earth.
