Good-bye letter from the Editor

It is with a heavy heart that I am stepping down as Editor-in-Chief of The Austin Times as of today, July 23, 2010.

I originally signed on with the 12-year-old weekly newspaper back in October of last year because I knew, I just knew, that it had potential. It did not have a website, a Facebook page, nor a Twitter account, and it obtained most of its content from news wires,  but that just gave us more room to grow.

In a few months, we were able to obtain talented local writers who were passionate about the community we live in and started creating a web presence for ourselves. We now have a website which has been growing steadily to over 8,000 views a month, a Facebook page with over 1,200 fans, and a Twitter account. We have even been re-Tweeted by national online media sources and organizations.

We have worked to help publicize the smaller events, organizations, and even sports teams in our community that we think need the attention because of the good work that they do, but are challenged to garner more awareness because of their smaller size. I’d like to think that, in some way, I helped make a difference in my diverse community during my time writing and editing for The Austin Times. I hope to continue to do so, but in a different capacity, as I must move on. To reference the Bob Dylan song, the times they are a-changin’!

The Austin Times will continue on with the hard work of the same wonderful writers and publisher, so please continue to look for the newspaper around town, visit the website, stay a fan on Facebook, and follow the tweets.

I’ve always been bad with good-byes, so I’ll leave it short and sweet:

Good-bye, good luck, be good, do good, promote good.

Sincerely,

Victoria (Vicky) Garza
