Corporate American runaways on the rise
Americans have traditionally been known to work more hours annually than any other country. However, with movies and books such as “Eat, Pray Love” and “Honeymoon with My Brother” there has become a growing sentiment of acceptance towards living and long-term travel abroad before retirement-age.
In fact, it may be more possible than you think. A movement of thinking, has begun to spread, that not is extended travel not career suicide, but in fact, it may actually be to your benefit to take a career break.
On September 14th, thirteen cities throughout the U.S. and Canada will host an event known as Meet Plan Go http://meetplango.com/ Created by Tara Russell, a Certified Life and Career Coach, http://www.threemonthvisa.com/ and the website co-founders “From Briefcase to Backpack” http://briefcasetobackpack.com/ Sherry Ott and Michaela Potter, Meet Plan Go was developed to raise awareness about career breaks and extended travel. The event is free and will feature travel experts in major cities across the country, Austin being one of them. At each event participants will:
- MEET inspirational speakers and like-minded travelers.
- Get motivation, contacts and resources necessary to PLAN the trip of a lifetime.
- Start taking concrete steps forward and get ready to GO!
Jeff Jung, one of the hosts of Meet Plan Go Austin, and creator of Career Break Secrets http://careerbreaksecrets.com/ , an official Meet Plan Go Sponsor, explained to me that why “now” is the perfect time to take a career break. While conducting research for his Career Break Secrets videos, he discovered that the nature of what it is to “have a career” is substantially different even 15-20 years ago than it is today. This is because the expectations have changed. In the past, it was not uncommon for someone to get a job and keep stay there until retirement. In fact, event ten years ago, statistically it was more difficult for a person to return to the work force after a career break than those who took a career break in 2005 or later. Today “neither side of the equation expects an employee to stay at the same job for his entire career; and while an employer still wants to see stability and continuity in a CV, it is not career suicide.” Additionally, the attitudes of Americans have started to shift from previous that of past generations. “While people want a successful career, a lot of people are searching for balance and do not want to wait until retirement to see the world and pursue their personal passions. Whether that be volunteering in a developing country, completing a pilgrimage like Camino Santiago in Spain, or traveling the world to experience the best places to paraglide.”
