The show is based on the 1997 book “El Secreto de Selena.”
A TV series about Selena Quintanilla is in the works at Telemundo.
Disney Media Distribution Latin America will produce an adaptation of the Maria Celeste Arraras book El Secreto de Selena about the late Tejano singer, Arraras announced Monday on Facebook.
“For so many years I wanted to bring El Secreto de Selena to the TV screen but it took me 20 years to find the right team to do it,” the Puerto Rican author and journalist wrote in Spanish.
“El Secreto de Selena is the revealing story behind her tragic death. It is a story very different from the official one that was told immediately after her murder. It turns out in the months before her death, Selena wasn’t as happy as many thought,” she said.
“This true story of our beloved Selena has all of the ingredients of a telenovela: lies, love, betrayal, suspense and a lot more. It is a controversial story, but it is also a real story that is handled with the utmost respect for her memory,” the writer insisted.
Selena was killed by her former friend and fan club president, Yolanda Saldivar, at age 23 in 1995. Her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, slammed the new series this week given that Arraras spoke to Saldivar for her book.
“Your book is based on a whole bunch of lies,” she said on Instagram Stories, according to Latina. “Your source is a person who killed, cold-heartedly murdered, my sister, shot her in the back and left her to die.”
Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, Jr., filed a lawsuit against her widower, Chris Perez, and Endemol media company in December over a different TV project about the singer’s life. The series was to be based on Perez’s book To Selena with Love.
