The 20-somethings: They're that odd species with lightning-fast fingers capable of texting, e-mailing, chatting on a cellphone and watching television -- simultaneously. And they're hip -- oh, so hip. A bit too hip for me. No, I'm no cougar. At my age, I could never date a 20-something. For one thing, I'm still mothering two 20-somethings. My girls are doing quite well, mind you. They are in committed, serious relationships with commendable young men. When you are a 50-something parent … [Read more...]

Studies more firmly tie sugary drinks to obesity
New research powerfully strengthens the case against soda and other sugary drinks as culprits in the obesity epidemic. A huge, decades-long study involving more than 33,000 Americans has yielded the first clear proof that drinking sugary beverages interacts with genes that affect weight, amplifying a person's risk of obesity beyond what it would be from heredity alone. This means that such drinks are especially harmful to people with genes that predispose them to weight gain. And most of … [Read more...]
Study questions how much better is organic food
Patient after patient asked: Is eating organic food, which costs more, really better for me? Unsure, Stanford University doctors dug through reams of research to find out — and concluded there's little evidence that going organic is much healthier, citing only a few differences involving pesticides and antibiotics. Eating organic fruits and vegetables can lower exposure to pesticides, including for children — but the amount measured from conventionally grown produce was within safety limits, … [Read more...]
Eating more foods rich in Omega-3s may lower Alzheimer’s risk
Consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may guard against Alzheimer's disease, new research suggests. The finding stems from work conducted among roughly 1,200 dementia-free patients over the age of 65. All underwent blood tests to assess levels of a key Alzheimer's-associated protein after providing the study authors with a dietary breakdown dating back more than a year. "Past research has shown that, in this population, higher levels of the beta amyloid protein appear related to a … [Read more...]
Chocolate for Heart Health: The Darker the Better
When it comes to heart health, not all chocolate is created equal. This was the finding of a new study in which researchers at San Diego State University pitted dark chocolate against white chocolate to see which one offered the most benefit. The researchers suspected that dark chocolate consumers would see the most health benefits from the dark chocolate, which among the various types of chocolate has the highest concentration of flavonoids. Flavonoids are compounds produced by plants … [Read more...]
As white rice intake rises, so may your risk for diabetes
People who eat white rice on a regular basis have a significantly increased risk of type 2 diabetes, a new international analysis contends. Harvard School of Public Health researchers reviewed the findings of four previous studies conducted in the United States, Australia, China and Japan. None of the participants had diabetes at the start of the studies. Overall, the trials included more than 350,000 participants tracked anywhere from four to 22 years. Researchers led by Qi Sun found a … [Read more...]
Overeating may double risk of memory loss:
Older people who eat too much are at risk for memory impairment, a new study contends. People 70 and older who eat between 2,100 and 6,000 calories a day may be at double the risk of these deficits in memory, which can be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease, the study authors said. "Excessive daily caloric consumption may not be brain-health friendly," said lead researcher Dr. Yonas Geda, an associate professor of neurology and psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Ariz. "It may … [Read more...]

The Souvenir Menu – Milano Café
To me, food tastes better on vacation. It could be because it is a vacation; lack of stress, better restaurant options when not pressed for time, or often just unusually good regional specialties. But, I am always astonished at how the humblest places in Italy seemed to have better food than many pricier places in the States. Often the same simple ingredients here just don’t seem to come together the same way. Recently, some friends took me to Milano café and I got a big surprise; a small, … [Read more...]
