The Souvenir Menu:Cipollina

1:34 pm by admin Leave a Comment

For Clarksville residents in central Austin, great food within walking distance has been the norm for decades. Jeffrey’s, long considered one of the best restaurants in the state has been at 12th and West Lynn since 1975. For Austin Restaurant Week recently I visited Jeffrey’s sister restaurant, Cipollina, about a half a block away. Though this casual Mediterranean styled restaurant has been in business since 1999, some big changes have happened this year. New chef, Daniel Hunt, a … [Read more...]

Nearly 12 million people in the United States are cancer survivors, almost four times as many as 40 years ago, reflecting big strides in cancer detection and treatment and the effect of an aging U.S. population, U.S. health officials said on Thursday. But many of the survivors face a lifetime of side effects caused by their treatments, according to figures released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute. The researchers found there were … [Read more...]

Study: Coffee tied to lower stroke risk in women

5:08 pm by admin Leave a Comment

Women who enjoy a daily dose of coffee may like this perk: It might lower their risk of stroke. Women in a Swedish study who drank at least a cup of coffee every day had a 22 to 25 percent lower risk of stroke, compared to those who drank less coffee or none at all. "Coffee drinkers should rejoice," said Dr. Sharonne N. Hayes, a cardiologist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "Coffee is often made out to be potentially bad for your heart. There really hasn't been any study that … [Read more...]

The Souvenir Menu – Nuremburg Brauhaus

1:35 pm by admin Leave a Comment

In a small strip center near the edge of Pflugerville is a small German restaurant that does something unusual. The chef makes nearly everything from scratch; the soups, the sausages, the schnitzels, fried potatoes, potato dumplings and even the desserts are made fresh by Chef Sonya Vogt, a native of Nuremburg. The menu is pretty straight forward; pork and potato heaven (plus beer).  While there is a “Nurem-burger” on the menu, the highlights for me are the traditional (Viennese) Wiener … [Read more...]

The Souvenir Menu – Cool River Café

7:13 am by admin Leave a Comment

For many years I worked in north Austin and the Cool River Café on Parmer Lane was always a popular choice for lunch with a Sales Rep or Client. The restaurant and bar complex looks a bit like a Colorado ski lodge inside and out; tall ceilings, oil paintings, wood paneling and a large stone fireplace in the restaurant. For a change, I recently had dinner at Cool River and was pleased on several fronts.  On a cold night, the restaurant was warm and comfortable, the food and wine were great, … [Read more...]

The Souvenir Menu – Star of India

6:34 pm by admin Leave a Comment

When I write a review, I sometimes check out some of the online review sites to see if my views are in line with the experiences people are generally having. Like most people I tend to have favorites and I like to make sure that being a frequent guest doesn’t completely skew my opinion. This week I decided to write about the ‘Star of India’ restaurant on Anderson Lane.  I have been going to this restaurant with friends for the better part of two decades. It was the closest Indian restaurant … [Read more...]

The Souvenir Menu – Holiday Champagne

1:27 pm by admin Leave a Comment

As Christmas and New Year celebrations are upon us, I decided to do some research into Champagne. Though I really like the stuff, there are dozens and dozens of French Champagnes to choose from in anything from a reasonable thirty dollars to hundreds of dollars for the non-vintage brands alone. Styles vary from crisp light wines to complex yeasty “serious Champagne”.  (I prefer the former.) And then there is the issue of sugar; though Champagne has been the drink of celebration for … [Read more...]
