By Edward Wyckoff Williams “Being gay is like being left-handed. It’s not really that interesting anymore.” George Will, the conservative political commentator, recently made this profound point while debating the merits of the Congressional repeal of the U.S. military policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT). DADT has until now banned gay men and women from serving openly in our armed forces. Will put it best when he said, “The evolving standards of decency mark a maturing society.” America is … [Read more...]
Bill Maher’s joke on Obama’s blackness reveals ignorance
By Dr. Boyce Watkins Apparently Bill Maher, the ultra-liberal talk show host who both entertains and annoys me, doesn’t understand what it means to be a black man. During a recent episode of his popular show, Real Time with Bill Maher, the host criticized President Barack Obama for not being a “real black president,” (whatever that means) in his response to the gulf region oil spill. Rather than paraphrasing, please allow me to quote Maher’s exact words. “I thought when we elected a black … [Read more...]
Where is the emotion from the president?
The media lashed out at President Obama for failing to show enough emotion about the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The complaining seems to be primarily from the White House media. This week during an extended press conference, the White House spokesperson was peppered with questions from the frustrated story seeking media. Meanwhile appearing on Larry King Live, President Obama said he was outraged by the actions of BP. There is always something to complain about. I don’t care if he … [Read more...]
Where will “The King” go?
In case you missed it, two-time NBA-MVP Lebron James has finished his contract with The Cleveland Cavaliers. That is the simple part of this up-coming 2009 NBA off-season. Now, here comes the hard part. The big question on everyone’s mind is, “where will he go”? If you turn on ESPN at any point in the day they’re talking about this issue. You’ll see reports that Lebron is talking with fellow free agents, Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh, or Joe Johnson about going to one lucky NBA team and making … [Read more...]

By Tony Dean Austin Times Staff Tiger may not be on the Ryder Cup Team? Really? This week U.S. Ryder Cup Team captain Cory Pavin said of Tiger Woods, yes that Woods, is not a guaranteed a spot on this year’s team. Pavin speaking to a gathering of reporters was asked if Woods failed to qualify for this year’s team would he select the world’s number one player as a captain’s pick. Pavin said unequivocally that Woods would be treated like any other player. TIGER WOODS, holder of 15 major … [Read more...]
From the publisher: Laura Bush and the “Mexican” problem
There are many issues and topics which are interesting and intriguing this week. So as a change of pace instead of picking one, I thought we could explore several topics in a new rundown format. Former first lady Laura Bush while promoting her new book dropped a couple of revelations to Larry King on Wednesday night. And, yes by the way, Larry King is reconciling with his wife… again. Interesting, when Tiger Woods was going through his situation, the only thing King would discuss with anyone … [Read more...]
To Mom: My number one fan
Hopefully, you remembered Sunday, May 9 is Mother’s Day. This day, across the United States, mothers are treated to a day off from housework, Hallmark cards, flowers, and breakfast-in-bed. It is a shame that we only have one day set aside for Mom; after all, she is the one who had to carry us around for nine months. She is the one that made sure that we made it to our practices, tournaments, and all other activities. That is why I personally want to take time out to say thank you to my … [Read more...]

Deceptive emails
From the publisher... As I was about to write this week’s opinion piece, I was very excited to share with you my thoughts on the week. I attended the BIG Awards on Friday and was motivated immensely by the spirit of commerce that enveloped the room. I conducted a fascinating interview with comedian Paul Mooney. And, the creator of Funk music George Clinton is town for a show which I can’t wait to see it. But just as I sat down and began this column, I received an email that warranted my … [Read more...]
We have overcome: A perspective
By Linda Chavez Benjamin Hooks, former head of the NAACP and long-time civil rights activist died this week at 85. I will miss him, my sometimes-adversary but always-gentleman debating partner. Hooks took over the leadership of the NAACP in 1977 from Roy Wilkins and was executive director until 1992. I first met Hooks when I was the director of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights during the Reagan years. My agency was much in the news at the time, largely because my fellow commissioners … [Read more...]
