Tiger Woods is scheduled to give a press conference around 10:30 a.m. today. There is much anticipation around the world’s number one golfer. Regardless, if you like golf or not, it’s a big deal. Prior to Thursday, the last time we saw Woods in public was on Thanksgiving - if you don’t count the rehab pictures. Much like older people talk about historic events and they recall there whereabouts, I was in the car with my mother when I heard the news. “Tiger Woods is car crash and taken to the … [Read more...]
The Souvenir Menu: Tien Jin
Years ago, when I was working in South Austin, I tried a small Chinese restaurant in a strip mall called Tien Jin. The lunch buffet, while better than average, had not hinted at the wonderful food that was possible. A good friend, who had been going there for years told, me that I had simply done it wrong. He said the secret was the “small” special menu. Michael Chau, the Chef and owner, along with his wife, JoAnna, are from Hong Kong. The specialty of the house was authentic Cantonese … [Read more...]
Fashion Freakout 2010
This week's adventure in fashionland took me to the front lines the third annual “Fashion Freakout" put on by the ever-so-clever with an eye for detail Audrie San Miguel, co-owner of Prototype Vintage Design. This year’s event took place on a crisp Friday night at the Mohawk. Fashion Freakout took me "Back to the Future" courtesy of Buffalo Exchange. From the first runway walk, I saw styles such as clean-fitted seventies pants for guys and classic mod sixties outfits for women. A snapshot … [Read more...]
Single in Austin: V-Day
Saint Valentine's Day is just a couple of days away and, of course, I feel the pressure to write about love or, rather, the lack thereof... What is Valentine's anyway? Should it be exclusive to couples, or can we single souls also partake? I don't know exactly why, but I always manage to keep myself single during this holiday. I can seriously say that I have been 'taken' twice for V-Day in the last thirteen years that I've been romantically active. My first Valentine's gift, at 14 years old, … [Read more...]
Imagine Austin: How does your Austin grow?
The City of Austin is planting the seeds of the future. It is asking for help from the community on how this garden should grow. Imagine Austin, a comprehensive two-year plan set forth by the City of Austin, wants to know how residents envision the city’s future. The City will use this public input to guide the growth, spending, and conservation of resources that Austin faces in the next few years. “The comprehensive plan is one of the biggest tools we have to shape Austin's future, and … [Read more...]
Run or rest: What’s best when you’re sick?
My whole life, whenever sick, I’ve debated with myself whether I should work out through the sickness or rest my body. This last week I was forced to ask myself this question for the umpteenth time. There are different schools of thought when it comes to this question: the school of sweating it out or the school of rest. Let’s begin with the school of sweating it out. Many of us have heard this, and I personally have done this many times. Even though a workout will make us feel better, … [Read more...]
Bar W XYZ: Comfortably swanky
Regardless of the work week, it is almost certain that as a busy professional you will crave or need a tasty alcoholic beverage to sooth your soul. Where do you find said beverage? As a round-about-town individual, I would love to lend you a hand in your quest for an after five o'clock social escape. I begin with this week's journey into the ever so popular Domain shopping center. I had heard from various Facebook posts and social butterflies that a trendy, lounge-like bar had opened in … [Read more...]
The Souvenir Menu: Fonda San Miguel
I was talking to a colleague recently and was surprised to find that not only had he not been to a particular local restaurant, he’d not even heard of the place. As I thought about it, it started to make sense; most restaurant reviews tend to cover the shiny and new. With Austin having one of the fastest growing populations in the country in recent years, old can be new again. One Austin classic that has survived over 35 years on merit is Fonda San Miguel. This beautiful … [Read more...]
Single in Austin: Pro Athlete
Remember when I DID NOT cheat on my boyfriend with that professional athlete? It was last summer. I was in a relationship with what turned out to be a complete TOOL! One of my best girlfriends and I had decided to go out for a much needed girls night at Cielo Club for some salsa, merengue, and bachata. You can take Boricuas out of Puerto Rico but you can't take their music out of them. Now, I don't particularly love Cielo. The men there are usually 5'3 and sleazy. But, I was in a … [Read more...]
AISD faces unprecedented growth in Spanish-speaking students
As a state, Texas is facing a unique challenge when it comes to education. The size, growth rate, and makeup of the state's population is "out of step with the rest of the country". Texas is seeing triple the growth in the number of school children versus the rest of the country. Travis, specifically, is one of the fastest growing counties in the state, especially in the pre-k and elementary school population, where a good grounding is required so that these kids don't start to have … [Read more...]
