Fashion Freakout 2010

9:52 pm by admin Leave a Comment

This week's adventure in fashionland took me to the front lines the third annual “Fashion Freakout" put on by the ever-so-clever with an eye for detail Audrie San Miguel, co-owner of Prototype Vintage Design. This year’s event took place on a crisp Friday night at the Mohawk. Fashion Freakout took me "Back to the Future" courtesy of Buffalo Exchange. From the first runway walk, I saw styles such as clean-fitted seventies pants for guys and classic mod sixties outfits for women. A snapshot … [Read more...]

Single in Austin: V-Day

1:04 pm by admin Leave a Comment

Saint Valentine's Day is just a couple of days away and, of course, I feel the pressure to write about love or, rather, the lack thereof... What is Valentine's anyway? Should it be exclusive to couples, or can we single souls also partake? I don't know exactly why, but I always manage to keep myself single during this holiday. I can seriously say that I have been 'taken' twice for V-Day in the last thirteen years that I've been romantically active. My first Valentine's gift, at 14 years old, … [Read more...]

Benicio’s ‘Wolfman’ is more funeral than fun

10:13 am by admin Leave a Comment

Authors and filmmakers have come up with endless ways to inject fresh blood into the vampire, while the werewolf generally has been left out there alone on the moors, howling at the moon. The big-screen is ripe for a new take on the hairy he-wolf legend. Yet despite a first-rate cast led by Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins and Emily Blunt, a classy re-creation of late-Victorian England and commendable respect for the 1941 original movie, “The Wolfman” is more a yawn than a scream. The … [Read more...]

Single in Austin: Pro Athlete

Remember when I DID NOT cheat on my boyfriend with that professional athlete? It was last summer. I was in a relationship with what turned out to be a complete TOOL! One of my best girlfriends and I had decided to go out for a much needed girls night at Cielo Club for some salsa, merengue, and bachata. You can take Boricuas out of Puerto Rico but you can't take their music out of them. Now, I don't particularly love Cielo. The men there are usually 5'3 and sleazy. But, I was in a … [Read more...]

SXSW Volunteers Trade Time for Pricey Festival Passes

Each Spring, Austin welcomes the international community of artists and industry professionals by hosting one of the biggest music, film, and interactive festivals in the world--South By Southwest (SXSW). Even with a year-round staff committed to building and delivering the conference and festival, there is simply not enough manpower to go around.  With about 29,000 registrants, an event this large requires thousands of people to make it possible. In order to entice individuals to help out, SXSW … [Read more...]

S21: Khmer Rouge Killing Machine is eye-opening

2:08 pm by admin Leave a Comment

Ten years in the making, a documentary showing at the Sundance Festival explores the inner workings of the Cambodian regime through hundreds of hours of interviews with the Khmer Rouge regime's number two. "Enemies of the People," in competition at the independent film festival held in Park City in the mountains of Utah, is the product of a collaboration between Cambodian journalist Thet Sambath and Briton Rob Lemkin.
