LULAC State Convention Comes to Austin

The 2010 Texas League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) State Convention will take place in Austin at the Hilton Airport from June 2 to 6.

The assembly will discuss hot topics with titles like “Civil Rights and You” to “Criminal and Justice Reform Efforts”. Elmy Bermejo, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs for the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, DC will present on management prospectives.

The event will continue with LULAC District 7, which includes Travis County, hosting a welcoming reception for the 2010 State Convention.  Proceeds from the event will be matched in partnership with the Hispanic Scholarship Consortium and go towards scholarships to benefit Austin-area students.  The fundraiser will be held at the Radisson Hotel Town Lake and special invitations have been made to Travis and Williamson county statewide officials and candidates.  In honor of past Texas LULAC state directors, there will be music by The Frank Gomez Band at the Oldies and Goodies Reception and Dance.

The weekend will include a women’s luncheon on Friday with special guest Eva Longoria Parker, Secretary of State Hope Andrade, and State Representative Norma Chavez. Other highlights of the conference are Future Leaders Youth Breakfast/Young Adult Luncheon on Saturday with Spurs basketball player Tony Parker, followed by  the State Director’s reception and awards banquet.  Presentations will include health topics on diabetes and physician’s health choices. A wide variety of vendor booths will be present Thursday through Saturday.

The festivities will continue Friday night at the Hilton, organized by LULAC District 12, as all in attendance hear the tropical beats to the legendary Varonil and La Fortaleza from Tyler, Texas.  Cinco Doce will be playing songs with a mixture of bachata, reggaeton, hip hop, and rock.  Saturday night’s awards banquet will include remarks from Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Henry Cisneros and Mayor of San Antonio Julian Castro.

The convention concludes on Sunday, June 6 with official business.
